“Something’s coming.”

These are the words spoken by John Goodman’s character in the newly released 10 Cloverfield Lane trailer that took the Internet by surprise on January 14th, 2016. Slated for a March 11th release date, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a sequel to the J.J. Abrams-produced, found footage horror film, Cloverfield, which grabbed the attention of moviegoers with its viral marketing techniques in early 2008.

J.J. Abrams is currently enjoying the success of the highly anticipated film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The latest installment claimed the record for the United States’ highest domestic gross of all-time, and has made more than $1 billion worldwide. While many moviegoers were clamoring for the release of Disney’s continuation of that franchise, J.J. Abrams apparently kept this huge secret away from the public eye. 10 Cloverfield Lane comes as a surprise to many since it was never expected. With less than two months before its release, one might think that this strategy is risky. However, Bad Robot Productions has developed a reputation for its strange marketing strategies.

Cloverfield boasted a viral marketing campaign that stirred interest among potential audiences before it came to theaters in January of 2008. Its marketing strategy was provocative and unconventional. The image of the Statue of Liberty’s severed head being flung into the streets of Manhattan spurred speculation among interested parties. People were curious to know what Cloverfield was about. Ultimately, it was revealed to be a found footage horror film that featured a giant monster of some kind. The movie was a box office success, and talks of a sequel were brought up. However, such talks quickly fizzled into obscurity, only to occasionally be mentioned.

The trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane steers away from Cloverfield’s found footage format and shows a group of three people who appear to be hiding in a bunker.

According to Collider, Abrams suggested that this movie is a “blood relative” of Cloverfield. It is not a direct sequel, but will apparently take place in the same universe. Judging by what is in the trailer, 10 Cloverfield Lane will feature a traditional cinematic narrative with a steady camera.

Here is what we know about 10 Cloverfield Lane so far:

The movie does not appear to be a found footage genre film.

The movie will feature noteworthy actors such as John Goodman (Roseanne, Argo), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Saves the World, Smashed) and John Gallagher Jr. (The News Room, Short Term 12).

It will be directed by up-and-coming director, Dan Trachtenberg (Portal: No Escape, Kickin’).

The story is written by Josh Campbell (Van Hellsing, Blade II) and Matthew Steucken (The Tower of Babble).

J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber are the movie’s producers.

The movie was originally filmed under the titles The Cellar and Valencia.

But there are still plenty of unanswered questions. Why are the characters hiding inside of a bunker? What happened to the world outside of their bunker? What did Winstead see on the other side of the door? What monsters will be in it, if any? For now, we will have to wait and see just what Bad Robot Productions has in store for audiences.
